Appreciations towards Cindy Zhang for providing the following description:

Across the centuries human beings have been looking for methods to make themselves live in a better environment. Before a variety of classic furniture were created, we went through a long battle and many remarkable experiments . Now,we response to these basic forms and construct our daily life upon them. Chairs for sitting, tables for setting, and beds for sleeping. With time moving on and on, fewer and fewer people would step back and doubt the ways we live in and the objects we are using . “To Sit” means to bend our knees and settle our body on supporters; “To stand”means to keep our bodies in upright position and be still’ “To Lay” means to put down our bodies and set it in horizontal position.

We are like frogs in boiling water that we are already dead before we aware of the growing temperature. We are getting more and more comfortable about everything exist around us and let them manipulate our living pattern. However, these gestures still can not give us a “life long pass”to avoid series of spine disease. Behind the pain, we are not only suffering perennial disease but also complacency. Most of people refer the information that is taught by society and grown up experience are the most reasonable and correct way for us to adjust to our surroundings.

We walk in a modern allegory and we haven’t notice, I called this allegory servility. Such servility ingrained in our bone and if we stop questioning and adapt to such setting that already existed, hundred year later, human beings’ eyes will as big as aliens and our body will degenerate. The echo that objects give to us is like a ball we catch, only when we throw it back we can enjoy the game.

The status and gestures we show when we are in some particular moods, like  frustrated, depressed or overwhelmed suggest what kind of support our bodies really need. People do not have enough time to think through their actions , all movements and gestures are subconscious , and this refers to instinctual.

The subconsciousness somehow exposes the real needs of body. My thesis discovers a series of gestures that reveal modern people ’s moods and creates a different and untraditional way to support the body based on those gestures.

Considering about all this, I started my observation on people’s gestures. One of the most fascinating things is that people slump without awareness,  this gesture shows people’s inner status in certain aspect, we behave in this way when we are closer to our instincts. The inner voice in our minds is expressed by body language: “I need to take a break”, “Let me lie down”, “I’m so tired”.

Depending on different needs when we relax our body in standing gesture . I design “Drape” in two different sizes. Shorter one for people to bend over their body and drape themselves on it, and the taller one is provide a support when people only need a surface to relax upper part of body.

Stick” are two wall pillows I created to provide a temporary rest for people. You do not have to sit down and take a rest, you can also stand, and you will be stick on it.

“Slump” is a upholstery piece that provide a comfortablesurfacefor you to settle your body on it. Curve shape is designed to instruct people to remind the shape of body. Help youeself with your own imagination. Let’s slump.

To consider about gestures we are experiencing everyday are linear and simple, which basically can be concludes to lying-sitting-standing. There is more ambiguity besides this three distinguished gestures and I want to discover them.
